The Benefits of Pet Massage

Just as massage has proven to have many health and emotional benefits for humans, it has been shown to improve the quality of life for our pets as well. More and more pet owners are learning the basics of pet massage to administer at home, and professionals are emerging in the field. This budding phenomenon has much to offer for you and your pet.
Pets worry, their muscles ache, and they get lonely. Just because they are not able to complain like humans are does not make their predicament any less unpleasant. Regular massages can not only help your furry friend relax, but it helps to maintain the bond of trust between owner and pet. The more your pet is touched in a loving, friendly manner, the less suspicious they will be of you and any other human contact. Hyperactivity, anxiousness, and worry can cause your pet to become rowdy, loud, and sometimes aggressive. By providing regular massages, you can keep your pet content and be rewarded with better behavior.
Pet massage also provides long term benefits for you and your pets. Massage helps blood flow, strengthens the immune system, and promotes longevity in general. Massage stimulates blood flow and circulation, so that more blood reaches the tissues, and more toxins are flushed out of the system. This will leave your pet feeling healthy and refreshed. The immune system is able to function better with increased blood flow and reduced stress. Also, anything out of the ordinary will be caught earlier if the owner is familiar with the feel of the pet’s body and the normal response to pressure. With the extra vigilance of the owner, and the immune system running at full capacity, a regular massage routine can ensure that you and your friend enjoy many years together.
Massage can also be incorporated into the healing process for your pet. This option, however, may be best left to the professional, as a thorough knowledge of your dog’s or cat’s anatomy is needed in order to prevent further injuries. Massage is meant to supplement the care of a medical professional, and never to replace it. Proper massage can help to restore mobility and flexibility to joints, and can lesson the pain of injuries and arthritis.
Pet massage is a loving thing that you can do for your pet that will promote maximum health, happiness, and longevity. While not a substitute for veterinary care, regular massages can keep your pet healthier. While there are some situations where it is better left to certified pet massagers, there are many techniques that you can learn at home to garner a better relationship with your pet. I will be examining some of these home-based techniques in a future article.
